Gadget guide: Money from thin air

My Business - May 2008

If you wan to mobilise your business but worry about being restircted to cash of cheque transactions, worry not: new gadgets make it possible to process credit card transactions anywhere you can get a mobile signal.

One such product is the Mint System. The gadget is a credit cad reader with a built-in printer which, when paired with a mobile phone, lets you take payments anywhere you can get mobile coverage.

You need a smartphone running Windows Mobile or a BlackBerry to use the Mint, plus a mobile data connection. You'll also need to be set up as an internet merchant with a credit card company. Mint has a sliding scale of charges to access the service, with $39 a month on a three-year contract the lowest price.

Telstra has a similar service, with its "T-Pad" card reader costing $299.

They all promise ease of use: swipe the card and transactions are reputed to take a few seconds, with the built-in printer providing the same receipt that would be issued in store.

Best of all, payment is said to be swift, a nice improvement on old voucher-style credit card arrangements!
